I now have a new cache of expired film

This afternoon I picked up from a friend a box of old film he had got a few days ago from a friend of his. It has, I just counted 'em, 155 24-exposure rolls of Kodak and Fuji film, all stale dated since 2001 and 2002. The cache appears to be what was cleared out of a local supermarket when they dropt film altogether a while back (there are empty enlargement envelopes there, too).

It's all C41, and mostly 200-speed, but about a third of it being rated 400-speed, plus two rolls of NPS160. I'll be using a lot of it, but I think I may get some kind of local thing going with some university-aged young people I know who are into film. It'd be fun to do an Expired Day In This Town project, or something.

But I think I am going to have to start, finally, doing my own C41 developing. I've been saying this for years but this might be what pushes me over that edge.

That's a nice cache! Better than the five rolls I found the other day going through a camera bag I forgot about. They're all 24's (Kodak 2x200 Gold, 3x400 Max), and haven't been able to get any of those around here for at least two years. I might be tempted to try developing them myself.

On my regular visits to the Brussels flea market I am always on the lookout for unused (and mostly expired films. So far I haven't been very successful. But last week I did find two factory sealed TDK SA C-100 cassettes for 1 Euro. That was not bad either...

I'll be very interested to know how you make out with this. Specifically, what C-41 self-development options you find available/accessible in Canada. I suspect that eventually this - or sending stuff away - is going to be our only option.

I'm counting myself lucky to have a local place that does a 1-week turnaround on C-41; $5.50 develop and $3.99 scan to CD for a 24 exposure ($6.50 develop for 36 exposure. Still not too bad; they do good scans. That said, I brought in three rolls of 35mm slide film. <cough> $13.99 per roll for processing (they send them out; week-and-a-half turnaround). Perhaps slides will remain a rare treat

Yes, there've been problems in the past getting the C41 kits here in Canada. I haven't tried in the past two or three years. I'll try again soon.
