Testing the equipment.

Hi,

Finally after a few months of taking the camera I chose a lens (Heliar f3.5 135mm) and bought some film (Ilford DELTA 100).
The first shot I forgot to set up the aperture and the fourth I was in a race against the sun coming out from the left tree, guess who won.

My aim for this shooting was merely to test 2 film holders, camera and lens. Everything is in order.
Subjects, first is the reason I came to Russia, second something you already know, at the hospital near my house but now in Autumn.

I would say this Heliar is a very good, a workaround lens, fits for landscape and portraits (no close-ups).
I need to put more attention to camera positioning, specially to the horizon (ball head tripod, maybe better a 3D type?)

You've got the general operation down, Alex. These are looking really good. The first photo of Vera looks more blown out on Flickr than it does here. I seem to have the opposite problem with clouds, always hiding the sun before I can get the shot off.

Looks like you had some fun and got some results, which is the important part. Just keep doing it until the order of steps is cemented. It becomes a lot less rush-and-fumble at that point...

Hi all,

Still testing lenses for 4x5. Shot at 1/25seg f16, two last not well exposed, I guess I didn't placed the shutter speed correctly, it has no ring for speeds and only dots (next time I will bring a better speed note for it).


1 - Protar 180mm, rear lens only


2 - Tessar 175mm


3 - Heli-Orthar 150-160mm? Rear lens only


4 - Heli-Orthar 130mm Both lenses.

Regardless the last two ones exposition, which lens please you more? Tone, contrast, sharpness, etc.
If you have any other consideration please go ahead.
Btw, I did not the develop/scan, soon I hope I start doing both. Photos haven't been corrected (Ps, Lr, etc)

Alex, sharpness looks about the same in these scans (maybe the first one is a bit worse). There might be a hint of vignetting in the 130mm, left down corner, but I am not sure.

The second one has a noticeable vertical streak in the right-hand half, but that cannot be a lens issue.

Tones and contrast are highly determined by scanning - you would evaluate these better by looking at the negatives.

Julio, as usual you have a superb eye (or two ) I got the negatives but it's difficult for me to understand the negative image, I need to practise to understand the real photo.
You are right about the vignetting, probably I didn't place the lens correctly because it "should" cover it.

The Heli-Orthar looks much better in the corners than the Protar or Tessar. Hard to tell for sure about the centers though because of the over exposures, though the rear lens version appears fine.

I just took a look at the negatives, Heli-Orthar (rear lens) is an step over Tessar in sharpness being Protar the third.
I'm going to shoot again for a closer subject, not portrait.

Alex - I saw that streak, too. Maybe you could take that negative back to the lab to see if they can determine whether it is on the negative or not.

In LGFF forum saw as well both long sides there are marks from the Jobo tank as one user said.
