Leica is making an instant-print camera

Post by melek »

It has a bizarre name - the SOFORT. I think Leica will announce the price tomorrow. If so, I'll add it here.

It uses Fujifilm Instax film, but I'm not sure which of the Instax films it uses.

Here's my writeup on it:

Yay, new instant print camera. Boo, it's not FP100 or FP3000.

Unfortunately, Instax is pretty much the only game in town when it comes to instant print film.

[Edit: Oops! Forgot about The Impossible Project! Probably because I can't afford their stuff, either.]

I'd love to see what kind of images this thing produces. I've used both types of Instax cameras and think the film itself is nice. It's ruined by the crappy plastic lenses the Fuji cameras use.

I can assume two things about this camera: it will have a real glass lens and will be priced too high for me to justify buying it.

If we all saw the world the same no one would need a camera.

I thought it was April 1st. But it is not. I actually went to the Leica site to check.

Leica is doing a consumer instant camera, and promoting it with the retro look of a VW van. Heck, I learnt how to drive in one of those. The van, I mean. not the Leica. It was a much older model than the one in the video, though.

Sofort means "immediately" or "instantly" or a meaning close to that, in German.

It is darn expensive for what it is, not to speak of the film, but at last we can see a Leica for the (retro) masses.

The first truly affordable Leica in a long time. Should actually sell pretty good. It even has the little mirror first introduced on a Minolta Disc camera for taking selfies.

Also new55, which is also expensive.

I also learned to drive in a VW bus. 1970 Transporter II. Miss that thing, despite its near inability to get to 60 without a tailwind.

I had a buddy who had a VW Beetle (from the 1970s), and he let me drive it. It had those "ankle breaker" pedals. Plus, the steering was shot on it. I don't know how we didn't end up dying in that car.

We picked up a few women, cruising around in it. Fun days back then. :)
