Bolsey goes Upstate...

Post by scott »

Hi, all -

Had a quick trip to see my daughter in upstate New York last weekend. It's early spring up there, but the snow is (almost) gone, and the skies were at least brighter, if still completely overcast. Seemed like a good opportunity to do some further learning with the Bolsey Model C. She's into thrifting these days, and she's pretty far out in the sticks, so we got to go to some fun little towns. All shots Arista.EDU Ultra 200 in Adox 110 dil H.

Traffic circle in Glens Falls. Cute town, decent ECHL team. One of the few brief doses of sunlight while I was visiting.

Image
Had lunch at Davidson Bros brewery. Really good food and beer; did NOT have stickers.

Image
St. Mary's Catholic church in Glens Falls. Parked nearby.

Image
Train trestle in Greenwich. At'd be "Green Witch" to you. Get it wrong, they'll let you hear about it. DAMIHKT.

Image
Bottskill Baptist church over the Batten Kill river, Greenwich NY.

Image
Champlain Canal lock #5, Schuylerville, NY. The canal has a towpath, great for walking.

Image
Hudson River view, Schuylerville. Runs alongside the canal; turned around from the lock and this was the view.

Image
Shack on the towpath in Schuylerville. I *think* this is owned by the municipality in Schuylerville; this little area is off the towpath, down a short walk from the local water plant and boat launch, and there are unused snow plows about 50' away. But I presume this is the local hangout for teens looking to drink or smoke surreptitiously.

Image
Ollie's Bar, Schuylerville. Wacko-crazy busy, pretty much every night.

Image
Byron's Market. Good place to buy WIld Hill syrup and Bear Wizz.

Image
Farmer's Daughter drive-on, outside Saratoga Springs, NY. First foot-long I've had in, dunno, probably 40 years.

The Bolsey is a super fun little camera to use. I think I'm getting the hang of shooting it with less shake, still a bit of room for improvement. Good light, and it's pretty easy. Poorer light requires some thought, but some of these were at 1/50 and don't look too awful, so definitely moving up the learning curve. Need to get the case together, though: Was just shoving the camera in a jacket pocket for a while, and at some point noticed I'd lost the front cell of the lens (!!!). That was a first. Turned out it was in the pocket, but there was definitely a few moments of abject panic. Still not sure how that happened. Images, even stopped down, are soft at the edges and tend to vignette. Personally, I'm loving that signature.

So far, this camera was definitely worth the effort. Need to run some color through it next...

What a nice outing with M, and well captured! Seems like you've about got it with that little guy.

And that's a fun part of the world to thrift in, must have been fun.
