Dancers

Often simply written as "W/NW" - your favorite photos. Explain them, or let your photos (film or digital) speak for themselves.

Dancers

Post by Julio1fer »

I find it very hard to take good pictures of dancers for various reasons. The pace is fast, the movements are not always predictable, and often light is unfriendly. Recently I was invited to an amateur Flamenco show in a theater. I shot all the evening but got only one picture that I liked:

What are your experiences photographing dancers or dance groups? Would flash be an asset? (I did not want to use flash during the performance)

You could always get another camera with higher ISO settings. Flash would only be good in a studio set-up, where it's just you and the dancers. Even then you'd want to place it so it's not so direct, like having the main flash coming from one side. For shooting in available light, you need to anticipate stops in the motion, and work fast.
