Well, thanks to @captainslack who gave me a Pentax Bellows II with slide copier I began looking at negatives and slides which i also "borrowed" from my mom

That's my plan also, once I get more organized around here. I've got a set for my Nikons. Do you use natural light, or a flash unit?

I like to eliminate as many variables as possible and make the processes repeatable

Years ago I bought a light table from GEPE in 4x5 format for a project of measuring the color of foods in real time during processing
After the project was over the equipment became surplus and I kept the light table


That has been a good light source, since it is constant in color and luminosity (when using a 9V adapter ) and is the one I used for copying my grandfather's glass plates. BUT it is showing signs of age, and some areas are darker than others.

However, while preparing for that I got a LED light source from Amazon (it was less than $10) which was not good for the glass plates because it iluminates in "stripes". These days I tried a heavy paper diffuser (i.e. a cardstock sheet) over it to even out the light and it works fine as illumination for the slide copier
Exposures are in the order of 1/8 to 1/2" @EI200 depending on the density of the slide but since it's all static that is no problem

I've got a slide viewer light box that should fill the bill if the color is good. I'll have to dig all that out some day.

This one was not a negative, but a paper photo that my mom had for ages
THis time, I helped her change the glass on the frame and took pictures of the photo in order to assemble them later (hugin)
The result was not bad; and the picture itself was a handmade panorama (as observed in the seams by 5-6) and as a child we always made fun of the super thin man (6)

This pic is important, as many of the people in there were important in my country and hospitals, streets, school, etc bear their names (3-4-12-14-19-20-21-22-23-30-31)
#21 was my mothers grandfather
#22 was my father grand-uncle

I thought this was done with a Kodak Cirkut Camera, but your explanation disproved that.

Some of the slides had a note in my gramps handwriting.... worth keeping?
I am dumb, so I just figured out how to work in layers to keep the notes legible while working on the pictures themselves
