I read a story once that said Eastman selected the word, "Kodak," because it could only be pronounced one way and couldn't be confused with anything else.

The "official" story according to the the people in Rochester was that he chose the word Kodak because the spelling remained unchanged in all major languages, and the variations in pronunciation were so minor that the word sounded the same in most languages. The first word proposed by the panel that he established to research a name was "Kodiak" but George dropped the "i". He was right on the money!
