New feature: Photo uploads

Post by AdminPTF »

If you don't have the ability to host your own photos or don't want to host your own photos, you now have the ability to upload and post them here.

Use the buttons to the right of the editing box and just below the "Smilies."

I'm working with the programmer to make some styling changes and also to add a "Add another" button. (UPDATE: Done.)

Uploading is simple:
  • Press the "Browse" button and locate the photo on your computer and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.
  • Press "Click to upload," and the upload will begin. A "busy" image will display while your photo is uploading. If you are uploading a large photo or if you have a slow connection, it could take up to a minute.
  • When the upload is completed, the entire area will be replaced by a string of BBCode. Click on the link to paste the [img] code into the editing window. The code will be pasted where the editing cursor is, so if it's in the middle of a sentence, it will paste the code into the middle of the sentence.
  • If you want to upload another image, click on the link below the BBCode string.
You always retain copyright to your image. I would suggest adding your name, year, title and any caption info to the EXIF data with Photoshop, PaintShop Pro or an EXIF editor.

Each photo can be no larger than 6MB. There is no limit to how many photos you upload, although I hope you don't upload every photo that you've ever taken since you took up photography in the 1960s. :)

You are not required to use this. I've added this feature for those who don't have a way or don't want to host their own photos. This is only for registered members.

You'll notice that the image has a nonsensical name. As photos are added, this prevents the system from generating a filename that is identical to an already uploaded file. If that were to happen, a photo in a previous post would be replaced by the current photo, because they both have the same name. Assigning each a unique filename for posting purposes prevents this from happening. Your original filename is retained on the server side.

Future:
  • Create member galleries on the forum
  • Figure out how to allow forum members to remove their own photos -- although once you remove them from a message, they for all intents are invisible and not searchable.
