Okay, when I shot the hydrangeas I set up a separate composition. Not sure how I feel about this one - I see a few things immediately I'd change to do it again, but thought I'd pass it by you all for thoughts.

I fall into patterns with shooting florals and I want to not do that. Hence the lamp. Just not sure...
Thanks for your input.

Not a rose II - thoughts?
Re: Not a rose II - thoughts?
It works for the sense of two domes and you did DOF and tones very very well.
I would have done vertically and giving the flowers more space into the frame.

It's close to something good. My 2c: I think a bit more space between the items, and positioning the light to get a bit more wash behind the lamp would help. As with traditional still life: one source, light against dark, and dark against light.

Switch the lamp on, tone down the highlights in the lamp shade.....maybe....

I like it, the lamp could be more int he background, with the light hitting it less so that the flowers are more separated
Re: Not a rose II - thoughts?
Thanks guys. I agree with all the above. Some detail: This was shot on top of a small cabinet we have next to an east facing window, backed to a darkish blue wall. I wasn't sure how this ortho film would record the blue, turned out pretty nice. Anyway, the vase was edged to the front of the cabinet, with the lamp pretty much against the wall. I'd wanted a bit more in the shadows with the lamp, and separation with DoF from the flowers. Opening up the aperture started losing detail in the hydrangeas, so this is as far as I went. To do over (which I may), I'll separate the edges in the frame a little. , and drop the blinds a bit to create a little more shadow.
Might be worth another attempt.
Thanks for the input.
