Her body was indeed found. It's all in the NYT article. Her Nikkormat was found containing exposed film, which has been processed.

Indeed, but in the mid-80s information was a lot slower than it is today
it was a legend, kind of a campfire ghost story that we heard

This was a very interesting story. The cold and dry weather certainly preserved the color film.
