if you are going to have fun with a Tilt / Shift then it would be at least interesting to understand or have an Appreciation for the Scheimpflug effect.

the above link will take you to a site that will illustrate how the Tilt/Shift of the lens will affect the DOF in relation to the Focal plane.( this is called the Scheimppflug effect.)
ignore the maths, the illustration is self explanatory.
in large format cameras and some of the smaller large/ medium format folder you can tilt/swing the Focal pane, or the front standard or both. it is mostly used to adjust/correct perspective.
