Black and white with a three colour sensor

Often simply written as "W/NW" - your favorite photos. Explain them, or let your photos (film or digital) speak for themselves.

Black and white with a three colour sensor

Post by P C Headland »

So, some nice guys a Sigma make a quirky camera with a different sort of sensor, one that records all three colours at once. So what does this guy do? Uses your fancy three colour sensor to shoot pictures with all the colour removed...

Here's a few from a couple of weekends ago, when I caught up with a photographer friend for an afternoon's wandering round a central city suburb.

Steps to somewhere:

Fancy downpipe attached to a fancy apartment:

Shadows and grills:

All shot with the Sigma DP2M, processed as B&W in Sigma ProPhoto and lightly tweaked in Aperture. I still really love using this camera, in spite of or maybe because of its quirks.

Nice! Because all colors are captured equally, it's also possible to use the color wheel in SPP as an after-the-fact filter, as if you had a yellow, orange, red, or green filter on the camera while shooting. Fun to play with.

Excellent, with P.C. signature written all over them. That's a good use of color sensors!

It does quite well rendering images in B&W, Paul. And you do even better composing them.

Outstanding.
If we all saw the world the same no one would need a camera.
