Canon 7 - testing

Got this Canon 7 in the Japanese auction site, jauce.com. Very fast shipping with the EMS service, BTW.



I was looking for a more modern RF body for my Russian and other M39 lenses. After reading a lot, I was tempted by the Canon 7 features, especially the selectable framelines. Not having to use an external VF almost makes RF photography a reasonable idea.

My technician curved an internal flap, so that the Jupiter-12 can be mounted in this camera. The selenium meter works reasonably well.

The test was made with the Canon 50mm 1:1.8 and the Jupiter-9, on the usual subjects. I shot mostly at 1/500 in f/8 or 1/1000 in f/5.6.

The 1.8 lens behaves quite well. This one is right against the sun, no hood.

The camera looks to be in fine shape and it certainly performs well. There may be no connection between the FL or FD 50mm f/1.8 and the one in M39; but, I remember using the FL or FD (don't remember which) on a Canon TX and I thought it was topnotch. Enjoy your new camera! Bill D.

These look really nice! Your Canon is in good hands. I, too, have a Jupiter 12. What was needed to mount the J12? I know it supposed to work on my Leica IIIf, but it lives on my Zorki.

I believe that this 50mm lens evolved from the many previous RF 50/1.8, used in a lot of Canon rangefinders before. Certainly it looks very different to the FD version.

As for the Jupiter-12, there is a dark baffle at 12 o'clock that needs to be deformed (pushed up in the center) to make room for the big butt of the J-12. Even after that trick, make sure that your hand is very steady when you mount that lens!

Great pictures, and I agree: I like best the one with the fish in the box.

Beautiful tones, too. Looking at them I thought it was Kodak Plus-X; I wasn't surprised it is Ilford FP-4.

Thanks for the comments! Kalle, I read about that site in other forums and am in my third auction now. My experience is good so far. Read the fine print; there are charges for different reasons all around, although not unreasonable.

Philip, FP4+ is an excellent film, and Beutler helps a lot. I miss Plus-X - I shot my last Plus-X in 1979...go figure.
