Flea market Voigtlander!

When medium format isn't big enough: 4x5, 5x7, 9x12, 8x10 and even larger.

Flea market Voigtlander!

Post by Captain Slack »

Picked up this old thing at the flea market about 3-4 weeks ago. Been out of town, so I'm just now getting to post it.

I believe it's an Avus. Missing it's lens, but the rest of the body seems complete. Bellows are no longer attached to the frame, but they look to be in decent shape. Haven't tested them for light leaks yet.

Definitely needs a good cleaning and possibly new bellows. I'd like to try to get it usable again, if possible. Obviously need to find a lens first. Wonder what kind of film to use? I think this was originally made for glass plates. Any suggestions?

Is this a 9x12cm "plate" camera? 9x12cm is very close to 4x5 inches, but not quite. I used to use a Voigtlander 9x12 camera that looked like this about twenty years ago. "Plate" doesn't necessarily mean glass; often it just meant cut (sheet) film. Back then, it was still possible to buy Ilford cut film that size. I don't know if anyone cuts 9x12 anymore . . .

If I remember correctly, the lens in mine was around 145mm and about f/4 or f/5.

They do still list 9x12, at least as rolls of 50 feet!

yes it's an avus
9x12 film and holders are availble.i have one of these babies complete, ground glass and all.the lens will be a triple(of course) set in a compur shutter.i don't use the cut film , i have a 120 roll film adapter to go on the back.works well.but i had to troll ebay for one .
(Warning-useless trivia alert)
Marilyn Monroe, before she was famous worked in a factory that made the roll film adapters.my adapter is of that vintage. gives you an idea of the age of these things
