My familial scowlfest

Post by Philip »

I am the usual photographer at all family gatherings and some years back I started getting pictures of family members with a variety of non-smiling faces. This has become a lot of fun, perhaps for all but certainly for me. I think this was our biggest scowl-fest yet, with twenty-four scowly physogs. The occasion was not just Boxing Day but also -- and more -- an informal celebration of the hosts' daughter's wedding (some 4000 km and seven weeks away). It was the first time her husband had been subjected to The Scowl; he was very good. I am told however that *I* didn't scowl enough; that is me in front with a Bah Humbug tie on. I need to cultivate my Deep Scowl.

This was with the Fujifilm X100 sitting on a shelf in front of us with its ten-second timer and a fairly low ISO rating (200). I used the flash but on "Slow Synchro" to get less contrast front-to-back. It is slightly cropt with some tonal adjustments made.

Well done! The guy in the middle has done this before. Not an amateur. You, Philip, do need some practice. :D

Thanks, Rose.
The guy in the middle must have been practicing in anticipation; it's his first time with this crowd.
And, yeah, I've been chastised for such a weak performance. I've got to get my scowl-mojo working.

An attentive and serious group! It looks like everybody kept their eyes open. Those are three big accomplishments with so many people. Your lighting and focus plans worked out very well, too.
