This is sort of new to photography and was first celebrated in 2010.
Why Aug. 19? On this date in 1839, the French government bought the patent for the daguerreotype and released it “free to the world."
Ironically, a couple of centuries later, the French government sharply restricted photography by requiring amateur photographers to obtain permission before photographing someone on the street, even if their presence in the photo was only incidental.

I believe the way it happened is Louis Daguerre gave his patents to the World, and the French government awarded him a pension for doing so.
But such trivialities aside, I loaded the Yashica 635 with some Kodak T-Max 100, and set out to photograph some of the small places along what is now the CSX railroad east of Lynchburg, VA. I found a few of them now only exist in name only. It was a fun trip down some roads I'd never been on before.
