A large part of our trip to Italy last month was seeing, visiting and sometimes photographing churches. When I get a chance, I'll add more.

Thanks for adding to this thread. You have added good quality and variety.

Paul, I like the abstractness of your first shot. The high contrast and stark, triangular lines are very powerful. And your black and white pictures please me very much. Given that I had less than 50 percent sunny weather in Wales, I was tempted to do some in-camera monochrome. I did do one of the Llangar church which isn't too bad:


Philip, the shot of the canal boats and the large church is a fantastic juxtaposition. You make me want to visit Venice. By all means, please do post more pictures from your trip.

Rich, I like both of your pictures. I've never seen pictures of that particular church at Yosemite. And I'm not in an area where there are storefront churches, but your "Jesus Saves" church is what I'd think is very representative of the type I'd see in a city.

Here are two views of the same church, taken about a month ago. It is the church of St Francis in Assisi, Italy. The topiary reads PAX, a nice message that is sadly ignored by too many governments.





Both shots were in the Fujifilm X100.

Here is a picture I took a month ago in Venice. It was looking across the lagoon at the island of San Giorgio Maggiore on which is (and most of which seems to be) the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. Chicken . . . egg.

As usual, I held the camera unplumb, so I twisted the picture in Paint Shop Pro.

The highway used to be at the same level as the church, but when it was rebuilt, it was raised over twenty feet, effectively cutting off the church and a couple of businesses.

I like the abandoned church a lot, Phil. As I commented on Flickr, it would be interesting to see the inside. Are the windows stained glass or clear? It appears to be very sound structurally. Do you have any shots of the front?

Phil,

I also like the abandoned church a lot. It was handy the way you could climb up on a hill and completely eliminate any keystone effect from the image. That is one problem with bigger buildings like churches, you often have the converging vertical lines. Like James McK, I'd like to see more shots of this church.
