Great pictures and story. I am guessing a quite accomplished amateur but more likely a pro, from the subjects and composition.

You just never know what you will find in a box of glass plates, Robert. And even though there is a lot of wasted space in the negative of the family in front of the white backdrop, the high resolution of a 5x7 negative means there will be minimum image quality loss when it is cropped and enlarged to a proper dimension.

I bought a box of smaller plates last year, but just haven't gotten around to digitizing them. Took me a while to find my light table, and then I just haven't given it much thought since then. But you've reminded me now that it needs to be done. Perhaps I'll tackle them while waiting for my three and a half month backlog of films are off to be developed.

Thanks, all! PF, I look forward to seeing what you discover...

There will also be more here as I work my way through the boxes I picked up over the weekend.

This is cooler than me looking for old slides. Most I have to recover the color on but with plates there is no color to save.

Thanks! I'm making my way through the boxes. Going away for the weekend, but should get back to it when I return. Mostly shots of New England houses so far, including some interesting interiors. Here's one of a location I was able to identify:
