And then there were none......

Post by GrahamS »

Two tall and ugly Austrian pine trees (Pinus Nigra) growing opposite our house have been a PITA for as long as we have lived here, which is now 15 years. They have robbed the west side of the house of light and every year, they have filled the rainwater gutters with needles. When we have a storm wind, the whole garden gets covered with pine needles. They are not indigenous to this area should never have been planted in the position that they were, probably by some uninformed parks department lackey. Today our complaints to the local council bore fruit - the trees were felled. We provided refreshments to the crew and I recorded the event with the Fujifilm X30.

Good series, Graham. I did that once to a pine that was growing right next to my foundation. Got to within topping it when the lady who owned the house next door came ranting about the mess I was making in her yard, and demanded I immediately clean it up. So I climbed down, did what she asked, and called it a day. I was going to finish the job later that week, but someone stole my climbing gear out of the van (along with a bunch of tools), so I never got around to it. Made it look like I had a six foot Christmas tree on a long pole. The new owners completed the job.

I drilled one inch holes in the stump and put lye in them.

Julio & Larry, neither of those methods is the way to go. Our method is a machine that drills into the stump and chews it up until there is nothing left but peripheral roots. No chemicals, no salt, no harm to the environment.

That's a lot of wood chips!

Round here, the non-natives on public land are either being removed gradually by the council, or get removed by mother nature. Whenever there's a bit of a blow, it's the exotics that tend to fall over.

Pines (Pinus Radiata) are a pest plant here, as well as being an important source of forestry revenue...
