Leica R3 with Elmarit-R 2.8/28 Test

Loaded with Kodak T-Max 100, and a yellow Series VII filter on the Elmarit-R 1:2.8/28mm, the Leica R3 Electronic was ready for whatever I could find. Or so I thought. It turns out there is a massive light leak at the door hinge seal, so I’ll have to remediate that before using the camera again.

Speaking of the camera, I liked the feel of it. Large, and made of brass, it has the heft of my older Nikons. The controls are well placed and easy to use without taking ones eye from the viewfinder. The meter system is kind of unique because the meter needle is also the indicated shutter speed marker. I don’t think I have the hang of it yet, as there were quite a few under exposures. It seems to work well on Auto, which is Aperture Priority only. There is a switch to go from spot to center-weighted readings quickly, but when in Auto the spot meter does not work.

First frame came out well.

Getting close to the brambles. And too dark.

One of the totally ruined shots. The clouds made a nice backdrop though.

Spot metering works good.

The lens has very good flare control.

Besides an obvious need for light seals, I also need to get some more lenses for the camera. Then the fun will really begin.

You have an excellent instrument there, PF. That lens is something else!

Great series of images. I really like 'Our star' and 'Silent light'. That's the sort of images I like to make myself. Well done and great camera indeed.

Clearly has a lot of potential once the seals are remedied. Still a good find!
