Trying again...

When medium format isn't big enough: 4x5, 5x7, 9x12, 8x10 and even larger.

Trying again...

Post by scott »

Hi all -

In my seemingly predictable two-month cycle, I burned some 4x5 today. One of two came out somewhat presentable:

Not sure how I feel about this, and I feel like I've lost a handle on the process of shooting and manipulating large format film. Dunno. Guess I need to do this more and see where it goes.

Thanks for looking. Technical: Asanuma 4x5, Sironar-N 210/5.6 (1/8 at f/8), Arista.EDU 100 in Adonal 1:100 (9:10 at 22C).

As a side note, there's got to be someone else on here shooting large format. C'mon - someone help me out here!

Scott

Keep the flame alight, Scott. Motivation comes and goes, but the ability remains.

While I was scrolling the screen up and down, it occurred to me that if you crop this so that the lettering of his shirt is removed, and then centered up, it really becomes a much stronger portrait.

Wish I was shooting large format. I keep picking up bits of gear I can use with it.

Thanks, guys. PF, I see what you mean, but I'm still partial to the walking-out-of-frame orientation. That said, I'm going to spend some time seeing if I can get rid of the writing on the shirt.

I think my LF gear is getting mothballed.

I have been shooting LF. Haven't posted anything recently because of travel and the like, but will try to put something up soon.

I uh, ahem, bought a Calumet monorail outfit the other night. We'll see where it goes from there.

Scott, by your leave, here's my suggestion. No matter the format, a tighter crop, change the lighting to give less emphasis on the right ear which grabs the viewers attention and position the eyes on the upper third. Maybe also a catchlight in the eyes.

Awesome Graham! I completely agree and approve. I'm going to have to bug you offline, though, you've exceeded my rudimentary editting skills. Have to find a CS5 course. Thanks for doing this, I very much like your vision.

Scott, I used Lightroom 5 and it took me 30 seconds! If you send me a larger file (3000x2000px) I'll do a printable version for you (8x10). I will send you my e-mail address as a private message, use either that or preferably, Dropbox.

Phil buries the lede. CC-400? Welcome (back) to the club!

Really like Graham's crop. One of these days soon, I hope to get back to processing photos, but family stuff will have to wind down first.
