Bowood House

We visited Bowood House estate in Wiltshire recently. The house is the ancestral home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne, who are still in residence. It is adjacent to the village of Derry Hill, halfway between Calne and Chippenham in Wiltshire, England. The greater part of the house was demolished in 1956. Another historical treasure lost due to irreparable damage caused by military occupation during WW2? But I digress - the estate grounds were designed by Capability Brown and in his inimitable fashion, has all the trademarks: a lake, waterfall, stream, exotic trees, rolling hills and dales, the required grecian temple and hundreds of acres of beautifully manicured lawns. I used my Nikon D610 and 24-85 f3.5-4.5 VR ED. Here are some of the images of the day:

So, the missing "greater" part of the house must have been huge.

About ten times bigger!

What exists now is the portion to the left of the small tower above the wing on the left.

Very impressive subject, and excellent use of that Nikon. The greens of England are hard to equal.

Oh, to be landed gentry in England. I take it Derry Hill would be where folks who worked on the estate (with the exception of the house staff) would have lived? Good points of view, and choice of subject matter, Graham.
