These shots were taken at dawn on a freezing highveld morning near Johannesburg. It was the start of one of the flights in the world hot air baloon championships back in 1990. I used a Nikon FE2 with a 135/f2.8 Nikkor Ais with Ektachrome 64 pushed one stop.

Shot #2 just slays me.... btw, the Ricoh is on its way to you, wrapped tightly and jammed into a Global Priority envelope, then taped securely.

Thank you kindly - for the words and for the Ricoh. I'm shaking with anticipation!

I agree, #2 is an *incredible* image; it belongs on the cover of a magazine like National Geographic or similar.
However, you can't fool me -- that last balloon isn't hot air, it's a gas balloon (no burner, has the small neck at the bottom of the envelope instead). Presumably helium; I wouldn't think anyone would try to fly hydrogen around all those gas burners... Shocked

I also like the colors in #2. Very nice shots indeed. I experimented with baloon photos many years ago at some baloon festival in Roanoke (Virginia).

I should have said that the last one is a reproduction of one of the famous historical gas baloons - I forget which one.
Thank you all for the compliments - glad you enjoyed.

Graham,
Great photos, thanks for re-posting. Film cameras might not have been as quick and easy as digital, but we certainly didn't miss out on capturing beautiful colors, did we? I really like the first photo shown.
Best,
Dennis
