Canon A1

Post by Captain Slack »

My latest flea market find! Picked up this beauty of an A1 with 50mm/1.8, bag, flash, & Quantaray 75-200mm zoom for $40.

Externally, it looks almost new. Internally, not so much. Shutter has the infamous squeak and the meter readout always flashes, which indicates underexposure. Had to do surgery to unstick the aperture on the 50mm, but it works fine now. On the upside, the shutter speeds sound accurate, so think I'm gonna put a roll of through it and use my handheld meter. Now, if only the weather would cooperate.

I was just going to ask you whether it has the Canon squeak, and it does. I saw a Web page some time ago about how to correct it. It was surprisingly easy, from what I remember.

I rather like this camera. I bought one a few years ago and still plan to get it cleaned up and do a write-up on it.

About the flashing display, maybe the contacts need to be cleaned. Or maybe it's just going to be that way.

I hadn't considered that! Won't hurt to try!

I really like that red LED readout in the viewfinder.

Shutter and Aperture both flash while in Programmed AE mode for over and under exposure. Try switching to Shutter or Aperture Priority to see you can get it to meter properly.

Tried that. It flashes regardless of what mode you're in.
