I used one small diffuse flash & umbrella at camera high left and natural light fill from camera right. Nikon D7100, 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 @ 60mm, f5.6 @ 1/90th ISO 100.

Excellent light. Focus is spot on. Hope that the subject was satisfied!

60mm is a good focal distance for portraits; I liked very much results with my old Helios-44 (58 mm).

Thanks Julio. I intended to use the 50mm f1.4 AF-D which would have given an effective 75mm focal length, but due to space restrictions I needed a tighter crop. The Helios 44 is a superb lens, I have one also.

About light, "natural light fill" is ..? A window? A white panel?

Very fine result, Graham. I just got myself the 16-85, but haven't been able to give it a try yet, so it's good to see what one can do with it.

The 16-85 is a very fine lens. At f5.6 it is very sharp across the frame at all focal lengths. Almost as though Nikon designed it to be used at maximum aperture. It's a little heavy for a DX lens, but it is very well engineered mechanically. See here: http://bit.ly/2uts1sU It will do very well on your D300s, Phil.

That's what I'm hoping for, Graham, seeing as it emulates the focal lengths of the 24-120 "Street Sweeper" I like to use on the F100.
