I grabbed this shot using my AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 ED VR on the D7100. It's about a 50% crop. The Red Kite used to come looking for Tikki, our Meerkat, who was initially totally unaware of the danger, until one day he and the Kite had a close encounter. After that day, Tikki kept one eye on the sky at all times. A programme to reintroduce red kites into wild has been hailed "the UK's biggest conservation success story". The birds were wiped out in Scotland and England in the 19th Century by people who mistakenly believed they were feeding on livestock and game birds. Just 50 years ago there were only a handful in Wales, but a reintroduction programme started in 1989 brought them back from the brink of extinction. It is now estimated 2,000 pairs soar across every county in the UK and 10% of the entire world's population live here.
