Westgate, Winchester, Hampshire, England

Post by GrahamS »

The Westgate is one of two surviving fortified gateways in Winchester, England (the other is Kingsgate) formerly part of Winchester City Walls. The earliest surviving fabric is of Anglo-Saxon character. I made these images on a recent visit using my Nikon D7100 and 10-24mm f3.5/4.5 lens.

Great pictures of one of those many fine places in the UK. One more spot to add to my list of places to visit when crossing the Channel next time. With increasing travel prices (what hasn't gone up lately?) and the need to apply for an Eur65 international passport now (thanks to Brexit) it will have to wait a while I'm afraid.

Beautiful yellows and grey stone. I was looking at the two coat-of-arms (?) at the top and those funny heads around them. There must be some meaning to them.

Julio, the arms are those of King Henry III and his wife Queen Eleanor. The heads or "likenesses" in the stone facade are those of bishops and clergymen of the time. (1222 to 1235)
