May've done a thing...

When medium format isn't big enough: 4x5, 5x7, 9x12, 8x10 and even larger.

May've done a thing...

So, someone asked me about lenses for 10x12 recently. Waxed nostalgic about a B&J Ajax #2 portrait Petzval I used to have. Thought I'd set up a search on eBay for one. Then this came up:

It'll be here Monday.

I checked measurements with the seller. Turns out, I have a back (two, actually) that, with minimal modifications, will fit this. I started out in LF with 5x7; I greatly prefer it to 4x5. It appears to be a Watson Portrait View (catalog page here). If that pans out, I'm going to be beyond geeked, as it will actually have front tilt (!!!). Paid $76 for it, just over double new in 1940. Might be high for a shorter extension field camera with no back, but the back isn't an issue (I could cobble a good one together fairly quickly, anyway), and I've never seen one in the wild. Had to buy it, right? Bellows look pretty good, but if they're not, well, I'mma learn how to fold bellows. I have a 5x7 holder already (life lesson: NEVER sell holders! Like, ever. Never know when you'll dip into a format.). My first camera was a Seneca Competitor 5x7 with this shorter bed. Was never a restriction. Looking forward to this. Have started trolling for post dated film and cheapo wooden holders. I'm envisioning a lot of long exposure tide shots this summer...

Oh boy, glad to see you in the game, Scott. Looking forward to what you discover about this camera, the project to restore it, and what you can get out of it.
