100 billion frames per second

Post by melek »

In the early days of photography, a question arose: Does a running horse ever have all four hooves off the ground at any time?

Because no one could actually see with their own eyes whether this was true or not true, a debate ensued.

Eadweard Muybridge shot a series of photographs that showed that in fact all four hooves do leave the ground.

We've been taught that the light travels at - well - the speed of light, and perhaps some of you have considered whether you could actually see a beam of light as it leaves a flashlight. That just didn't seem possible.

Engadget has a short piece about researchers at the Washington University in St. Louis that are using "compressed ultrafast photography" to photograph 100 billion frames per second. In the article, the researches claims to have captured a beam of light as it approaches and bounces off a mirror.

Not exactly the technology that we need, but it certainly makes for fascinating observations.
