Gravel Hill Baptist Church and Cemetery

Post by PFMcFarland »

New Years Day found me driving around in the countryside, looking for roads I haven’t been on. The sunlight was kind of iffy, with weather moving in, but it wasn’t too cold.

I had not been on the western part of Gravel Hill Road in Botetourt County, VA before, only the eastern end. So I pulled off of US-220 to see what I’ve been missing.

At the top of its namesake, there sits a small Baptist church that has been closed up for some time now. There have been some repairs done, such as half of the main roof being replaced recently, and the grounds are taken care of, but mostly it sits abandoned to the elements. A small cemetery wraps around the back of the property, but doesn’t appear to have any new graves in the past decade or so.

The church was organized in March of 1876, and the current structure was dedicated in July of 1946. I think I’ll go back in the spring, when I can have better lighting, and bring the shift lens with me.

The bones are still good, but the skin is going bad.
