Nace Road Trestle

There are many trestles along the Norfolk Southern Shenandoah Division mainline that runs from Roanoke, VA to Hagerstown, MD. This is one of them. Situated in Botetourt County, VA, it crosses the road to Nace about a mile from US-11. All the bridges on this line were rebuilt back in the 1930’s by the Norfolk and Western Railway to a stronger design in order to handle the larger engines and traffic loads.

So the caboose crew could put out tie fires, which were fairly common in the days of coal fired locomotives
