Samson Flat Fire

Post by Martolod »

14 days ago we had a severe Bushfire tear through the Bush not that far from my Place.in fact although we live in the Suburbs we did receive a fire Warning...but the wind changed and we just got a little Smoke.after a week of 42+C weather, hot storms we got a rain.lots of rain. our annual rainfall came down in just a few days.and thunder .and lightning.and Hail.......
i had the chance go up to the fire floor and shoot a few Frames. in some place the fire just ran through, the trees still have (albeit scorched) leaves on them.these Gums will recover i less than 6 months they will be Green again. in other places often just across a road or a break, all that is left is the main trunk.all branches and floor litter has been consumed.there the fire burned long and hot, and those gums will have a high mortality rate. even after all the rain there a spotfires still smoldering 2 weeks later. the fire has got into the roots of some trees and is still burning, slowly and the tree will topple in the next few weeks as the roots are turned to ash.so it is still a very dangerous place to go. most white people call this sort of fire 'destructive'...they forget it's their own fault by not burning the bush every year like the native Aboriginals used to. i see this fire as a breath of fresh air, tragedy ,yes, for those who have lost their homes, but for the bush it is a rebirth,a cleansing,

the fire floor as far as the eye can see in all directions

the light colored lines and patches are tree trunks that have been completely burned

Fire can be a wicked thing, Kalle. But like you say, it's necessary for the health of the forest. Thanks for documenting the area.

Impressive. We get some forest fires but nothing even close to this.

Hot temperatures, gum trees and wind..... Glad it turned before getting to you.

The colours seem almost surreal.
