Yashica 230AF with 35-70mm 1:3.3-4.5 Macro test

Post by PFMcFarland »

Another junktique shop camera, this one actually works. I shot a roll of Kodak Gold 200 after our last snow back in early March to test it out. Don’t know if the cold affected it too much, but I had to do a bit of work on most of the images. I think the lens is prone to side glare, and it definitely is too short on the tele end for my taste (35-70mm). But it handles well, and now that the weather has warmed up I might give it a better test of all the functions.

Here are a few of the test shots, more at the link.

Phil, I seem to remember that this Yashica made news when it came out; maybe it was one of the early AF cameras that appeared soon after the Minolta? Your test shows that it came through the years well and will shine along with the spring sun. On the RFs and HFs that I've seen the Yashica lenses are something special.

Thanks, Bill. Only thing about the AF lenses is they were no longer designed by Yashica, but Kyocera. Could have had some former Yashica engineers in on the job, but Kyocera would have had the last word. Not at all like the ML manual focus models, but the ones I got for the 300AF (with power zoom) worked fine. It was pointed out to me by other users of the 230AF that it was actually the top of the line model, and the higher/later numbered models had less features.
