Testing Another Canon MC

You point and then you shoot. Some are inexpensive. Some are very expensive.

Testing Another Canon MC

Post by PFMcFarland »

My second go around with Canon’s little “Micro Camera”. The first one quit focusing, likely before I got it, but I didn’t notice it until the second roll when I tested out the close focus range. This one seems to be okay.

With a 2.8/35 four-element four-group lens behind its sliding front door, the camera features Auto Focus, Auto Film Transport (Loading and Rewind), Auto Exposure, ISO range of 64 to 1000 (user set, no DX), and a detachable flash with a range of 3 ft to 13.1 ft on color negative film.

Power is two AAA alkaline cells for the camera, and two more for the MC-S flash, for a total of four. There is a flashing red LED in the view finder for Flash needed, which goes steady when the flash is turned on. You have to look at the back of the flash unit though for a Ready indicator light, so best to shoot with both eyes open. Focus confirmation is by a series of icons with a pointer, but this only activates at the time of the exposure, not before.

Tested with Kodak ColorPlus 200 (repackaged Kodacolor) at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, VA.

These are cute little cameras. I have one, but don't have the flash. Recently, the roller for the door crumbled, and the sliding lens door fell off the camera. :(

I like the photos. It seems to be a very sharp lens.

I did not know this one.

NIce little camera and excellent results from the test. I wonder, was this Canon's answer to the XA?

I'll send you the non-focusing one for a parts donor, Mike. Unfortunately the flash doesn't work. Just shoot me your address.

I'd have to do some research on when it and the Oly models came out, Julio, but it was definitely influenced by them.
