Camera Talk

A long title for such a small camera. It’s another in a line of sliding-door point-and-shoot cameras with a 38-80mm zoom lens instead of a 35mm fixed focal length.

I used Kentmere 400 on a rainy day to check out the “All Weather” rating of the camera. The DX metering, and auto focus were just fine, except on a couple of shots. And on one of those it was definitely my fault.

Staunton, VA and the surrounding Augusta County area were the subjects of this test. Other than a light leak that appears to be coming from the lens barrel, the camera performed very well for an old P&S.

Here you can see the leaks as arcs in the corners.

You did well with the test, and light was right. Those are nice little practical camers, especially with fast film.

I have one Oly of that series, but it is only "Olympus Stylus 80". No Epic, Deluxe or Zoom, although it does have a 38-80.

Yes, I have one of the non-deluxe versions around here somewhere. Other than the weather proofing, the only difference I see in the specifications is the Epic has a slightly faster lens of f4.5-8.9 as opposed to the regular model's f5.3-10.4. This equates into a EV 0.4 gain on wide-angle, and EV 0.5 gain on the telephoto end. ISO DX range is the same at 50-3200, with non-DX setting of ISO 100.

It depended also what market the camera was sold in as to what name it was given. Apparently the "Epic" name was only used in the USA. Deluxe stood for weatherproofing , IEC Standard publication 529.
