I have threatened to start posting more, but had not expected to start this way.

I have been trying to decide on a new camera - EM5II or DSLR. But this not about that decision - yet.

I received a notice from my eye physician that it was time for my checkup. I had assumed (very dangerous for me) that I would be getting a new prescription because I had noticed that my vision had changed a little. Well, as luck would have it, I am developing a cataract.

Generally, as I understand it, cataract surgery is a routine operation, but I only have one eye, so there is a risk factor. My question is about which cataract replacement lens to choose. At this time, I am planning to use a distance focus lens and reading glasses. This should not be a problem as I already wear trifocals. There are other types of cataract replacement lenses available so any experience anyone has had with these lenses or about the operation would be greatly appreciated.

I am also assuming(ha!) that there will be no effect on my use of either type camera after the operation. Any comments about this also appreciated.

My wife had cataract surgery two summers ago. (I may be next, so I paid more than usual attention to her physician.) Although she has both eyes, one is a "lazy eye" (amblyopia) that was uncorrected when she was a child. As I understand it, the multifocal implants require time before your brain adjusts to them. Further, vision may never be fully corrected with just the implants and special care must be taken by the surgeon when placing the lens in the eye. Finally, most insurance policies won't pay for them. Given these qualifiers, she got monofocal lenses for distance correction. She has needed reading glasses for years and, of course, still does. To her, this is no problem. I recently got her a DSLR and she has been photographing without difficulty. Good luck with your decision!

It is indeed a routine operation, of course critical like any eye surgery. Surgeons have been operating cataracts for hundreds of years already. My late father had both eyes operated without any problems. You will be able to manual focus very sharply afterwards! Best of luck!

I don't have any personal experience with cataracts, except that my Dad had the surgery on both eyes in his late eighties, and they came out okay. The biggest thing is to follow the surgeons orders afterwards.

PS I just had my eyes checked today and my cataracts are still there (surprise), but not so bad as requiring replacement. I'm sure my time will come.

Some interesting replies.

My understanding is that cataracts "ripen" (good word?) at different rates for different people. In my case it seems to be fairly rapid, and with only one eye may have to come out sooner than the doctor would normally like. I guess I'll have look into some audio books to keep me occupied until the bandage comes off.
