Re: Burke & James 5x7 Project Cam - Progress...

Excellent. I've been happy with my old wooden holders (have them in 4x5, 5x7, 8x10, and 11x14). They usually need regluing in the corners, as with yours, but I enjoy using them. Plus a bunch of them are actually plate holders with the film inserts, so work either way...

Re: Burke & James 5x7 Project Cam - Progress...

Hey, I've already done all the work of figuring out how even a doofus like me can do it, should be no problem for you, especially if I can tell you what's what. :-) Seriously, it's no harder than homebrew, which you're good at (I've done a bit of cider-making only). If you do find yourself with a pl...

Re: Burke & James 5x7 Project Cam - Progress...

Are those film-only or plate holders with film inserts?

Need to get you to try plates one of these days. I'm helping to teach a workshop in making them next month, so I'm deep down the rabbit hole at the moment getting ready.

Re: Burke & James 5x7 Project Cam - Progress...

Looked at the page. Ouch … Yeah, I didn't need much, and it was a lot cheaper five years ago! Started in on the bellows patching. I’ve never had luck with liquid electric tape as a patch but this seems to be holding. However, the bellows is a sieve. Holes are tiny, but a bunch of them. Might be abl...

Holy cow - where do you even buy borosilicate? I can't even find double thickness float around here.
I looked it up: I bought it online from Mountain Glass in Asheville. In 2020! (man, time gets faster and faster.)

That looks great! Let's see some results...

Re: Burke & James 5x7 Project Cam - Progress...

Ha, yeah, a while back on somebody's recommendation (maybe LFPF) I bought some borosilicate glass for ground glasses. Turned out to be nearly impossible to cut cleanly, despite my cutter working fine on normal float glass, both before and after. Irritating for sure!

Re: Burke & James 5x7 Project Cam - Progress...

Nice work, Scott! Wonder if it's an early B&J, or perhaps an entry-level line they had for a while.

Oh boy, glad to see you in the game, Scott. Looking forward to what you discover about this camera, the project to restore it, and what you can get out of it.

Re: Restoring smooth opening on a Retina II?

Just had a Retina Reflex S with the Xenon 50/2 land in my lap. It's raining Retinas!
