Paul, 'imploded' is indeed a fitting description. Indeed I think that's how the artist made them.
Dennis, you're right - it could be a fun subject for B/W and/or different lighting situations (stormy sky, backlighted, misty, etc.). If they weren't so far away from where I live I'd go back and try it (well, for us Belgians 120km is far away...)
